New Mexico History

with Wes Koerner

Calendar Current session started Jan 14, 2021 at 4:30 pm, runs for 18 weeks

New Mexico History and Geography Seminar.  This is a survey course of the historical, political, economic, social, cultural, religious and geographic features of New Mexico.  The focus of classwork will be lectures, note-taking, and discussion of New Mexico's colorful history and geography, especially the story of New Mexicans from prehistory to the present.

In order for parents to be able to modify the class to meet the needs of multi-age or multi-skill level students, required work will be minimal; mostly students will be expected to do some reading or other research to be able to join the discussion.  However, optional assignments will be provided to parents to allow for parent discretion in modifying the class for their particular student, including textbook reading with review work, suggested readings from historical or literary works, term papers or presentations, and for younger students modeling and poster projects.  In order to receive high school credit a student should demonstrate an understanding of how the aspects of New Mexico's History contribute to or are reflected in issues today.

Text:  A History of New Mexico Second Revised Edition by Clavin A. Roberts, PhD and Susan A. Roberts, PhD University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque 1991, This edition is out-of-print but preserves valuable information that has been lost in more recent revisions.  A used copy of the text will be provided on loan to each enrolled student.

Survey of popular music in the United States from the 1840s until the present.  Delivery style is mainly lecture, but I do recommend that only schoolers (ages 15-18 perhaps) be in the class due to the nature of some of the music with themes of romance, betrayal, race relations etc.
