Archaeology & the Bible

with Marsha Edminsten

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 7, 2021 at 1 pm, runs for 11 weeks

Archaeology & the Bible is a hand's on/lab approach to understanding this fascinating topic. Students will progress through all phases of an archaeological dig, while digging deeper into many phases of this science, such as site location & survey, tools, timelines, conducting a dig, pottery, tools, ancient writing types, anthropology, radiometric dating, agriculture and daily life, all cast in the realm of the book of Genesis, specifically Gen 18-19, and the catastrophic event that caused the destruction of Biblical Sodom. Learning "through a variety of biblically-based academic disciplines, to uphold the divine authority of the Bible as God’s only inspired representation of reality to humankind, and equipping them to apply its eternal truths to all phases of life." (TSU Mission)

The 10 unit study will end with a trip to the Trinity South West Museum.

This ancient city is currently being excavated by Dr. Steven Collins, and I am collaborating with them in this project. The Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project (TeHEP) is a joint scientific project between Trinity Southwest University's College of Archaeology & Biblical History (Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA), Veritas International University's College of Archaeology & Biblical History (Santa Ana, California, USA) and the Department of Antiquities of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Developing the "Mind of Christ" for Living in the World

with Corrine Rios

Calendar Next session starts Sep 14, 2021 at 10:30 am, runs for 9 weeks

Ages 12-18 Parents also welcome

Book included with class. "Developing the Mind of Chris for Living in the World" by Corrine Rios.

Description: "Three out of every five Christians (59%) disconnect either permanently or for an extended period of time from church life after age 15.

The reasons?

#1: Churches seem overprotective. "As young Christians, they express the desire for their faith in Christ to connect to the world they live in."  Their church experience seems irrelevant.

#2: Teens and Twenty-Somethings experience of Christianity is shallow.

#3: Churches come across as antagonistic to science.

#4: Young Christian's church experience related to sexuality are often simplistic, judgmental.

#5: They wrestle with the exclusive nature of the Christianity.#6: The church feels unfriendly to those who doubt."  Barna Group Five Year Study by David Kinnaman

Will that be your child?

My goal will be to make the Bible relevant to our young adults.  We will be discussing topics ranging from how to overcome personal spiritual battles (anger, unforgiveness, being unloving, fear, worry, depression) to current issues of the day (abortion, religious persecution/liberty, poverty, sexual identity, Israel, role of government, bioethics, church is politics/government, Islam, and patriotism).  All from a Biblical Worldview.

This will NOT be a lecture type of class. There will be homework, there will be the sharing of homework, there will be discussions of our faith from students.  Students will learn HOW TO start having the "mind of Christ" in regards to their everyday life. They will also learn how to defend the faith.

Corrine is a mother to five children, has been homeschooling for twenty-three years, has a Master's Degree in Elem Ed., a Biblical Counselor, and author of the Flesh vs. Spirit Bible Study.

Personal Finance - Middle School

with Mona Koerner

Calendar Next available session starts Sep 14, 2021 at 10:30 am, runs for 12 weeks

This course makes use of the Dave Ramsey Foundations in Personal Finance: Middle School curriculum, which is a 9-week curriculum.  The curriculum includes video instruction as well as activities and a student text.  My goal is to complete all activities and textbook work in class.  Students should not expect to have "bookwork" to complete outside of class unless they do not complete the activities during class.  Instead, homework will involve observing, practicing and thinking about money in their daily lives.  In addition, we will be supplementing the curriculum with some experiential learning by planning and operating a small business venture.  *During weeks 7, 8 and 9 we will be operating the business and we will have the need for some of the students to stay until 12:45 during these 3 weeks.  This will be a fun opportunity for them.  As some students have classes starting at 1:00 we will make sure they have the opportunity for a quick lunch and get to their next class on time.  Please plan to have your student stay an extra 15 minutes these weeks if possible.
